Someone asked me the other day if I was creative.

When I think of "creative" I think of someone with raw talent. Like if I gave them a napkin they could make a small Eiffel tower replica, then whip out the colored pencils they carry around with them to add the proper shading. But is that what creative really is? I feel like it cannot be defined, or if it can, its connotation goes much farther. Creativity is having no bounds and drawing outside the lines of society. Am I simply trying to find someway to call me "creative"? Maybe, but I'm here to stand up to all the people labeled "creative," and who have shut down the people who work better with numbers then markers. The creative people don't get to decide what creativity is. Besides you might draw that pretty building, but we are the engineers who make sure it doesn't collapse on top of you.

Unfortunately, I don't know if I'm the engineer or the artist. Hopefully college will help clear things up. So the next time I get asked if I am creative, my answer will be, "I don't know yet."

  1. I have this happen too with the phrase "artistic". I don't think i'm an artist at all {I don't do anything very edgy or new or innovative} but I am creative (in a crafty sort of way). I never felt this way until I got to college, and this time in life has a way of showing us the things that have been growing inside us all that time. I was actually voted most artistic by my sorority right before I graduated and I couldn't even believe it. Here is what I wrote that day : http://samanthashorey.blogspot.com/2009/04/heart-of-mine.html

I can't wait to see where your adventure takes you!

  2. so true. I think everyone has a little creativity in them, it is just expressed in different ways, which is exactly what's CREATIVE about it
