What is awkward?

As of Webster's dictionary....
awkward- lacking ease or grace (as of movement or expression); lacking social grace and assurance (an awkward newcomer); causing embarrassment (an awkward moment).

Many know of my uncommon "curse" of not being able to detect awkward moments. For me they just roll by without recognition. Some of you might think, EVERYONE has those unavoidable, awkward situations and that I am no exception. I want to clarify and reassure everyone that I have awkward situations, but my outlook is warped. If some trips, falls, spits, makes a weird noise, looks uncomfortable, or performs a usual task in a weird manner, I end up laughing, talking about it, and moving on. Although I even do not fully understand it, there has been a common hypothesis between people who know me well and it is my love for talking. Silence is usually the evil twin of awkward; it has the ability to also change any "not so awkward" situation to "spiraling down until self destruction". The talent i desire to have is the ability to know when someone feels awkward. I understand when someone feels "uncomfortable" by basic body language, but I have to really know the person to be able to tell when they feel awkward. I found this really funny video on Youtube, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

My tips for anyone who wants to weasel their way out of an awkward moment: Laugh and move on! Nothing you can do will make it go away or give you the ability to turn back time. If you are not 100% sure the other person did not see you do the awkward thing, DO NOT pretend like it didn't happen! Just add a little laugh with a, "my bad!" or "wow talk about a bad day" then quickly move on. DO NOT look down and shuffle your feet dwelling in the silence, DO NOT wait for the other person to strike up conversation, take the liberty! And most of all, please do not try and exit an awkward situation with a hug, because that will most likely be awkward, too.

9.99 times out of ten the other person wants to move on and will be glad that it is over. They don't want to watch you suffer and they especially don't want to be pulled down with you.

  1. hahahahaha! i don't understand how you avoid awkward moments. you'd think out of everyone, you'd come into contact with them the most. and then get a hilarious story out of it. haha

    love you!

  2. Thanks for visiting my blog! I'm glad we're in agreement over John Mayer. He, most definitely, is not awkward in any sense. :)
